Bio Pon from Bio Leaf - 1 litre - FINE
Please note due to weight, orders over 4 litres (eg: 2 x 4 litre bags) may need overweight shipping paid. I'll be in touch if needed. I'll be clever with my packing to try and get you standard rates and won't incur any extra shipping charges without your okay. Yes, you can add other items in with a heavy items order, no problem :)
Bio Pon FINE is also available in 4 litres >
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the Lechuza brand of Pon. But boy is it hard to get hold of (and that's not just in this part of the world). Plus it includes slow-release fertiliser which isn't ideal if you're like me and want to avoid fertiliser burn by staying in control of what your plants get fed, how much and how often.
Pon is a soil-alternative you can use by itself or as an additive to improve your potting mix. I've found Pon amazing for my Hoyas, Alocasia and Aroids in particular. I'm no longer a member of the Alocasia One Leaf Club (where every time a new leaf was on the way an old one dies). Plus what a difference with fungus gnats! No soil for them to lay their eggs in and munch on my plant's roots. Speaking of, roots love Pon too. I first tried it with a hoya cutting that refused to root.
Bio Pon: Same but different
Bio Leaf to the rescue! Now we can get Pon made right here in NZ. And it's fertiliser-free too (thank you!). Plus being fertiliser free also makes it truly all natural without synthetic additives. Made from pure mineral volcanic rock plant substrates. Bio Pon is also available in two grades.
Which grade should you get?
FINE
Fine is about the same size grade as Lechuza Pon (around 1mm to 6mms). For all your fine to medium root size plants such as Hoyas, String of's and Chain of's, Cacti, Begonias, Peace Lily's, Succulents, Syngonium, all your small to medium Aroids like Pothos and more. Fine is also perfect for propagating, for all your baby plants and little guys.
MEDIUM/CHUNKY
Then there's the coarser grade Medium/Chunky which is about 2 to 3 times the size of the Fine (around 5mm to 10mm with some chunkier pieces up to 2cms), ideal for all the big boys and chunky monkeys of the plant world such as mature Philodendrons, Monstera and more. Between the two grades, the Medium/Chunky would be my pick if adding it to your potting mix for increasing drainage and aeration.
Pon vs Leca
Pon gets its name from 'Semi Hydro-PON-ics'. It's a popular 'remedy' for fungus gnats and pathogens like fungi, just like Leca is, but tends to be more user friendly than Leca, as Pon is prep-free and ready to go out of the bag. Both Pon and Leca maintain a balance of less water than air even when wet. Pon is also heavier than Leca.
What's in Bio Pon?
A mix of pure mineral rock substrates: pumice, zeolites and scoria (also known as lava rock). These rock substrates maintain a root-friendly ratio of around 45% water and 55% air even when wet.
PUMICE (BIMS)
Rock produced when lava with high water content meets hot volcanic gases., producing a 'bubbly' light, porous rock. Helps loosen heavy substrates, improve aeration and reduce compaction, keeping plenty of air space for roots.
ZEOLITES
Crystal-like volcanic stone known to trap harmful heavy metals and pollutants like lead and nickel. Soaks up excess water to help avoid waterlogging and keep mixes airy. Zeolites are also naturally fungal inhibiting and help balance pH.
SCORIA (LAVA ROCK)
A super-porous natural volcanic rock full of tiny holes which collect excess water and nutrients, held in reserve until roots need them. Often used as a bottom layer in terrariums and pots without drainage to help prevent water from pooling.
What fertiliser should you use with Pon?
The easiest and recommended way to fertilise plants grown in Pon is with a hydroponics fertiliser that provides all 12 essential minerals. It's more important to give plants a complete fertiliser when growing in 100% Pon, not just a typical fertiliser that only provides the 3 macro-minerals (NPK), since Pon is soil-free. A popular fertiliser for Pon (and Leca for the same reasons) is Growth Technology, such as their famous Foliage Focus. you can shop all GT Focus fertilisers here >
