Who are Seacliff Organics?
Using cutting edge mineral and soil food web analysis, Otago-based Seacliff Organics create world-class, balanced living soils and organic soil amendments that enable plants to express their full genetic potential.
Seacliff Organics focuses on organic inputs and source locally where possible. Producing small-batch soil blends and organic soil amendments, all right here in NZ. Taking it back to the fundamentals, always with a focus on waste reduction and sustainability. Providing everything our plants need, where they need it, to ensure everything is available for uptake, when your plants require it.
What does aloe do for plants?
Aloe Vera is full of helpful lignins, the building blocks of plant cells. They improve photosynthesis and help plants grow healthier, larger, faster and greener as plants are better able to utilise light.
Aloe has been shown to help improve germination and root formation, making it a popular alternative to synthetic rooting hormones (like Clonex), used in organic horticulture for propagation.
Aloe is also naturally rich in salicylic acid which helps boost a plant's natural defences against abiotic and biotic stresses, such as root rot, salt burn, drought, temperature extremes and heavy metal toxicity.
Although impressive when used as a foliar spray, on seedlings to established plants, Aloe Powder is often saved for cloning. Soaking or dipping cuttings in Aloe solution both protects cuttings and helps speed up root development and foliage growth. Aloe is also used as a soil drench following stress, such as transplanting, to help plants recover faster after repotting and get back to the business of growth.
Is aloe a fertiliser?
No, aloe boosts growth, especially for cuttings, seedlings and younger plants, but is not a fertiliser. Best used alongside your usual fertiliser routine.
How does aloe compare to coconut for propagation?
The soil team at Seacliff Organics (who use and sell both Horticultural Coconut Powder and Aloe Powder), back up what other growers have reported also, that aloe is superior to coconut for propagation.
Compared to a product like Groconut, which averages $2 per litre at the propagation rate, or Seacliff's Horticultural Coconut Powder which averages 70 cents per litre, Aloe Powder is also the most cost-effective at 50 cents per litre. Win win, both for propagation and your plant budget.
Directions for use
MAKE AN ALOE SOLUTION
Measure out 1 gram of Aloe Vera powder (that's one teaspoon) per 1 litre of water. Strain through a piece of cheese cloth or a muslin bag, which is included FREE when you order Seacliff Myco from me at Love That Leaf :)
TIP: For cuttings, keep the remaining aloe slurry left in the muslin bag to dip cutting into after soaking.
SEED SOAK Soak seeds in aloe solution for up to 12 hours before planting.
CUTTINGS Soak cuttings in aloe solution for up to 12 hours. For best results, also dip the cutting end in aloe slurry before putting in your chosen cloning medium.
SOIL DRENCH To encourage vegetative growth in potted plants (faster growing, bigger, greener foliage), water with aloe solution once a month.
FOLIAR SPRAY To encourage vegetative growth (faster growing, bigger, greener foliage), spray with 1 litre aloe solution per 1 square meter, as a foliar spray.
Storage
Once opened, take care to keep product sealed and dry. Handle with dry gloves and dry tools. Store sealed in the fridge or in a cool, dry place indoors. Avoid ingesting or inhaling the aloe powder.
