This may seem silly, but when I was new to plants, I couldn't find the perfect little grow pot anywhere. Such a simple thing (you'd think), yet so hard to find. Turns out Elho had the perfect little mini propagation pot all along. These little beauties were designed in collaboration with growers. Here's why they're so good...
Perfect mini size for propagation
Each just 6.8cm tall x 7.5cm diameter and being wider than they are tall that helps prevent the annoying tip-over, giving precious plants a more stable home, especially important when the roots are new and not yet providing an anchor for the plant. Perfect for newly rooted cuttings that are ready to graduate from water, or planting cuttings straight in to soil. I propagate pretty much everything in these.
Developed by growers
Elho consulted with growers to make sure their mini grow pots go above and beyond for propagation. After all, that's a nurseries livelihood. These pots are sturdy, fully recyclable, made of at least 70% recycled plastic, and UV safe for use indoors or out. Sturdy enough to use again over and over, with just the right amount of give to carefully 'squeeze' babies out when they're ready to pot up a size.
They also provide excellent drainage even though they're tiny, keeping water from pooling at the bottom and drowning baby roots (which can otherwise lead to the dreaded root rot). I use mine with drainage mesh trimmed to size for no loss of soil or substrate when I water.
DRAINAGE TIP: Always avoid adding a 'drainage layer' such a gravel to the bottom when potting, as this actually shifts water to pool above the drainage layer, moving it up closer to the roots! Big no thank you. Drainage mesh is way better and safer, even more so with cuttings when there's a higher risk of root rot as those new roots grow, or water roots adapt to the move to soil.
PROP TIPS: When propagating in water or substrate, I dip my cuttings in rooting gel (my current go-to is the Yates Clonex) for much faster root formation. The sooner those roots start to grow the less the chance of losing your cutting to leaf rot. Clonex is also an antifungal treatment for extra protection.
For soil propagation, I love either Fern Fibre or Spag Moss, but Hydromix is also a great option depending on the plant you're propagating.
Definitely grab a few at this price. They're so handy to have a little stack of them on hand at home so you can propagate when the mood takes you, with no waiting time or delay to get the supplies you need. My son loves these too so he doesn't have to see me throw away cuttings when I trim my plants. He just takes them and pops them straight into a mini pot to start growing a new plant to gift to his Nan and friends at school.
PS: These pots fit beautifully in the Elho table-top greenhouses, both the small and medium for extra protection for new babies.
