Love That Leaf is proud to stock the world famous Hidehisa Shears from Toyama Hamono, Japan. Fire forged and made by hand, combining traditional methods of Japanese Sword making, with the precision of modern engineering. Hidehisa have been making shears for over 160 years and gained a reputation throughout Japan for excellence in gardening shears.
Hidehisa have won design and performance awards worldwide, exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, adored by plant hobbyists the world over for their design, pleasure of use and performance.
The Hidehisa Houseplant Shears
These are my favourite from the entire range. I love the long accurate blade for reaching in to tricky places and cutting with absolute precision. I use these for every plant in my indoor jungle.
They measure 20cm long by 5cm at the widest point across the handle when closed. 7cm blade length. Weight 165 grams.
The spring is set at the perfect tension for effortless cutting, opening back up for you. Built-in catch with clever tension system. It's hard to explain the joy these are to use without you trying them yourself. Until I owned these I didn't realise what a vast difference there could be in gardening tools.
This model is designed for indoor house plants with up to 10mm diameter stems and branches. Perfectly suited for close-up, delicate, exact work for indoor plants, floristry and Bonsai. Clean, accurate cuts for trimming, tidy-ups and propagating. These are really something extra special. A gift to treasure for a loved one, or to spoil yourself.
What's in the box
Black, metallic-embossed box, authenticity and care documents, with protective blade pouch.
The Hidehisa difference
Fire forged
Made with Japanese carbon steel (hagane), the same steel used for Japanese swords (katana). In the past, fire forging was heavy labour that required the skill of the master holding a red-heated buillion with gold chopsticks in one hand, gavel or mallet in the other. Although the form of work has changed in modern blacksmithing, traditional techniques remain. The heating method achieves the degree of perfection and strength expected from a Hidehisa tool. Hidehisa blacksmiths use all 5 senses to achieve this level of perfection.
Back sharpened
Traditionally, it is the back of the blade not the surface, that is the heart of the scissors. Hence the term 'cut on the back'. Sharpness of shears is greatly affected by the sharpening of the back, not the front. This method requires skill and experience, passed down from generation to generation.
Balance and design
There's a pure joy that comes from using tools at this level. The ease of use, the smoothness of Hidehisa in action, and perfect balance in the hand, all proof of the skill of the craftsmen.
Correct care
Hidehisa are very sharp, definitely not for use by children, even when supervised. Care should be taken at all times. They are designed for cutting indoor plants, garden plants and flowers to approximately 8mm to 10mm (not for hard wood or thick branches). Start off using your shears on softer, thinner stems first to get familiar with use.
Always wipe clean after every use. Store in a dry location, indoors, away from humidity and moisture. Steel tools will rust if stored dirty, wet or in high humidity. If putting away to store, lightly oil before storage (using scissor, knife, sewing machine or blade oil). Never cut wire or plastic with your shears or you may notch or damage the blade edge.
Reviews
"I am a serious gardener. Having the right tool makes any job easier. I've had many different types of pruners and these are the best by far. These pruners are serious business and I recommend them unreservedly. They have maintained their fine edge. A sound tool is a thing of great beauty!" Melissa Chase
"Beautiful craftsmanship! I bought this for my wife so she could have a set at least similar to a pair I have that were given to me by my Japanese grandmother 30 years ago. These were just as well made and I was equally impressed and proud to give them as a gift. Stop buying the cheap crap they sell in the chain stores and wasting your money! Buy the last shears you will ever own!" Craig Landolt
"I waited to replace my inexpensive gardening tools but it was worth every penny to replace with tools from Japan made by companies with integrity. I love tools specifically suited to a job and invented by someone in the know of what it takes to get the job done. They are quality all the way. Highly recommend." Verified Amazon buyer
"These are very well made shears... I'll never buy the cheap quality shears again." @siol
Perfectly imperfect.
Being made by hand, Hidehisa have slight differences and imperfections, minor surface marks, dents and blemishes. These in no way impact use, and are a sign of the craftsmen who made your tool. Do not expect machine-made perfection in appearance (just perfection in use).
