NEW > Now available in 3 new colours: Lilac, Lemon Vanilla and Pink Lemonade, plus the original Sage
This is the plant tool you had no idea you needed. No more guesswork when it comes to watering. No need to get one per plant either. Just one GrowProbe will take care of your entire indoor plant collection. GrowProbe reveals the secrets of what's going on below the surface in your soil.
Your GrowProbe will tell you exactly how moist your plant is, right to the bottom of the pot (even for the big guys), so you can decide when to water without guessing. A fool-proof way to avoid over-watering. Much more affordable than getting one moisture meter per plant. No meter to read. No batteries or refills required.
Take your pick from 4 colours > Sage (the original green), Pink Lemonade (pastel pink), Lemon Vanilla (pastel yellow), or Lilac (pastel purple).
How do you use a GrowProbe?
Easy peasy. Push it down into your pot as far as it goes (at almost 24cms long it's perfect even for your bigger pots). Give it a little twist to take the soil samples. Then pull it back out to check how moist the soil is, right to the bottom of your pot.
How do you know when to water?
If all the soil samples in the notches are dry, it's time to water! If your plant prefers things on the moist side, like a Peace Lily, you might like to water when only the bottom one or two soil samples are moist and the other samples further up are dry. GrowProbe takes 4 soil samples at different heights in your pot so you can decide when it's time to water according to what your plant prefers.
Most aroids, hoyas and more prefer to dry out before you water again, so for those you can water only when down to the deepest soil sample is dry. Just give that last soil sample a wee squish between your fingers to see how moist or dry it is. Super simple.
Who is the GrowProbe for?
The perfect tool for anyone who's ever been unsure when to water. Especially handy for over-waterers and for new plant parents learning to read their plants and soil. No plant-mind-reading required! I love the longer size, making it perfect for medium to larger pots where you can't possibly stick your finger down deep enough to accurately check the moisture level. You don't even need to lift pots anymore to try to guess by weight how wet the soil is.
I've started using mine as my fertiliser stirring stick too. Bonus is it also aerates compacted soil down at the root level where it matters most. Plus no more dirt under your fingernails digging around in the soil!
How big is the GrowProbe?
For smaller pots you might prefer something like a Crew Soil Sensor, but for all your more established indoor plants in standard medium to larger pots, GrowProbe is your go-to. You can use it for smaller pots also of course, you just get fewer soil samples.
Just the probe (excluding the leaves handle), measures 23.5cms long. The 4 notches you can see at the end of the probe takes 4 soil samples from the bottom 10cms of the pot. The total height, including the leaf-shaped handle on top, is 29.5cms.
The GrowProbe story
One of my favourite things about GrowProbe is you can support your plant's health while also supporting NZ made. GrowProbe founder Shayna lives in Wellington. After falling love with plants when living in London after many visits to the Kew Gardens, Shayna returned to NZ and became a horticultural technician. It was important to Shayna to help planty parents like herself with a product that didn't cost the earth, or hurt the earth. GrowProbe is made locally here in NZ from recycled materials.
GrowProbe quick FAQs
- Best used in pot sizes 12cms+
- Best to push in near the edge of the pot to avoid the roots.
- If used on a plant with pests or disease, sterilize between plants with rubbing alcohol to avoid spreading pathogens.
- Best results when used on finer substrates that retain water (eg: not suitable for bark).
- Feel the soil samples to determine moisture/dryness (best not to judge on the colour or look of the samples alone).
This is for the GrowProbe with or without packaging (depending on which option you choose). Plants, pots and other accessories shown in some photos not included.
