It seems like such a simple change, but wow, what a difference clear pots make. I love being able to see the moisture level and monitor plant root health without having to disturb my plants to sneak a peek. Clear pots take so much worry and guesswork out of caring for your indoor plants.

 Size

Rain Clear Pots
now come in 9 sizes (below). This is the Rain 20, the largest size, measuring 20cm wide across the top x 19.5cm tall and 14.5cms wide across the base. A perfect size for the big guys, and for extra room to fit in bigger size support poles.

(note volume below is based on filling to the top, no allowance for dropping soil level at the top for ease of watering and no allowance for the space the plant's roots will take up)

Rain 7 - 6.5cms x 7cms - volume 170 mls

Rain 8 - 7.5cms x 8cms - volume 330 mls

Rain 10 - 10cms x 10cms - volume 0.75 litre / 750 mls

Rain 12 - 11.5cms x 12cms  - volume 1 litre

Rain 14 - 14cms x 12.5cms - volume 1.3 litres

Rain 15 - 15cms x 14.5cms - volume 2 litres

Rain 17 - 17cm x 15cm - volume 2.5 litres

Rain 20 - 20cm x 19.5cms - volume 4.7 litres THIS SIZE

Rain 23 - 23cms x 20.5cms - volume 6 litres

How much soil will you need?

All volumes are approximate but use the volume above as a guide to work out how much soil or other substrates you need. Remember to allow for the plant's roots when buying substrate to fill your pots, you'll need less than you might think!

What pot size should you go up to?

As a general rule, it's best to only go up one to two pots sizes when repotting. Too big an increase can increase the risk of root rot and temporarily stunt or slow down foliage growth as all that extra soil holds so much more water and the plant will shift its energy to growing roots to fill in the new space.

One pot size is about one inch, so about 2cms larger in width or height than what you plant is in now. For example, from a 12cm wide to a 14cm wide pot depending on the pot heights. If the new pot is both taller and wider, that may account for moving up two pot sizes, so do check both height and width.

What are Rain clear pots made of?

Rain
pots are recyclable (recycle code 5), made of the same type of thermoplastic used for food, for everything from kids lunchboxes to medicine bottles. I prefer this type of plastic for plants because it has:

  • High chemical resistance to reduce leaching, making them a better choice when using fertiliser so nutrients stay available to roots and don't build-up over time.
  • High heat resistance, handy for sun lovers indoors, and for cleaning with hot enough water to kill any baddies if you ever get pests. Also top rack safe in the dishwasher.
  • Great clarity for use when you want to see what's inside, ideal to keep an eye on root health and check moisture level.
  • Low moisture loss making it easier to predict when your plants need watering again, and a great option for heated, dry-air conditions like a typical kiwi winter.
  • BPA free for peace of mind.

 Support ridges for extra strength

Although they are hard to see once potted up, look closely and you'll see all the Rain pots have fine support ridges running down the inside of the pots (they are smooth on the outside). These add extra strength and sturdiness, great for plants on root roids that like to get pushy, like ZZ plants. This design allows for strength while still being thin enough to retain high clarity, so you can easily monitor root health. Still thick enough to reuse over and over. Definitely not a single-use throw-away.

Drainage for water and air flow

I love the simple yet clever drainage design on the Rain pots. 12 decent sized drainage holes for free flow of water with a raised asterisk design to increase airflow and reduce the risk of fungi and root rot.

    GOOD STUFF

I enjoy dealing with this firm. Good stuff, nicely and informatively displayed in the online catalogue, well packed and shipped promptly - nothing unusual so far for a firm that wants to succeed in online retail - but with a lightness of touch, a happy cheerfulness, that makes you want to stay on touch and keep on ordering..

I've just waiting for my third order in as many months to arrive. I'll be sorry when all my orchids are repotted.
